About the Employer

Job Description

The Earth Observation and Citizen Science (EOCS) Research Group seeks a motivated Frontend Developer to build and maintain project websites and support the design of mobile applications. Background: The research carried out by the Ecosystems Services and Management Program (ESM) at IIASA focuses on ecosystem management for provision of services related to fiber, food, water and bioenergy under global change. The team benefits from a multi-disciplinary research environment, where quantitative analysis plays a strong role in linking a wide spectrum of models, reaching from detailed process based biophysical models to global economic models. The Program is strongly connected to the international academic community, placing emphasis on transdisciplinary synergies and applied approaches. Accurate and reliable spatially explicit information on the Earth’s surface, and in particular its anthropogenic use, is at the crux of our need to understand our changing planet and to be able to create biophysical and economic models with reliable input and calibration data. However, it is exactly this information that has been shown to be highly inaccurate over many areas of the globe and across multiple sectors. Hence the Earth Observation and Citizen Science (EOCS) Research group has built and deployed tools and platforms to use citizen science, crowdsourcing and expert knowledge in order to improve in-situ data and the overall information base of land cover and land use globally via product integration and geospatial approaches. One of the tools is the platform for visualizing and collecting land-use information. This and other citizen science and crowdsourcing tools need new graphical designs and front end development. Developers in the EOCS group at IIASA work closely with researchers and project managers on designing and realizing modern web and mobile applications for citizen science as well as expert-focused projects in the field of earth observation and environmental studies, and websites to showcase these R&D activities. They are responsible for a big part of the success of for example major EU-funded projects and carry out design, development and testing tasks throughout the entire lifecycle from the initial proposal writing stage, over the requirement analysis and implementation phase on the project, until the deployment and maintenance phase. The Position: The successful candidate will work closely with our team to design and realize modern web applications to showcase R&D activities. Primary responsibilities include the building and maintenance of several project websites and support in the design of mobile applications. The candidate must show initiative, be flexible and take responsibility for the developed apps and websites. The candidate must have good verbal and written English communication skills and must have a positive and professional work ethic. Skills and Requirements: Solid understanding in relevant technologies and software requirements: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript  Good knowledge of UI frameworks like Bootstrap, Materialize, Foundation, etc. Experience with frontend technologies like Angular, Vue.js, React.js, Aurelia, etc. Expertise in UX software such as Sketch, InVision, Balsamiq, Framer.js, etc. Proven UI and visual design abilities, which can be demonstrated through a portfolio of relevant work examples Practical experience and great understanding of responsive and mobile design Up-to-date knowledge of the latest UI trends, techniques, and technologies Fluent in English (including the ability to write and edit engaging text). Optional Skills (preferred): Practical experience and great understanding of responsive and mobile design Experience with GIS and mapping frameworks.
