Zoopla is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Software Engineering Lead to head up one of our backend teams and continue building some of the UK’s most popular brands. Our award winning websites attract over 50 million visits per month, and our engineering teams are at the forefront of it. Working in cross-functional Agile teams, our engineers build the platform behind all aspects of the business, including our websites, data processing, search, analysis, reporting, CRM and finance. Our platform architecture is based on AWS, Perl (Mojo, Mason), NodeJS, MySQL, Memcached, Gearman and Python with deployment using Jenkins and Docker. This is a dual leadership and hands on engineering role where you will be both leading a team of backend engineers (c40%) across our various teams and contributing as part of a cross-functional agile product team (c60%) Key Responsibilities: Management: Line manage a team of backend engineers to ensure engagement, retention and career development Identify training needs in individuals and across the team Hire and mentor new engineers, maintaining a culture of innovation, teamwork and self-improvement Work with product owners to help ensure engineers are engaged, delivering at pace and building high quality systems. Collaborate with your peers on technical strategy across product teams. Engineering: You’ll be key in helping to build new features and enhancements to our platform. This could include the APIs that drive our website, back-end tools, intensive/distributed data processing, search technology, complex valuation algorithms, and server control functionality. REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL Track record of technical and / or team leadership Ability to recruit high performers Knowledgeable and comfortable with Agile development practices Perl platform development MySQL experience Proficiency in at least one other scripting language or platform (eg Node, Python, GO etc) Agile team experience DESIRED Linux, Apache, MySQL, HTML::Mason, AWS
