DevOps engineer for SuperCollider analytics platform

This is a DevOps opportunity in VMWares fast growing internally facing SuperCollider Analytics service. You will be working with a top-notch team, which has a strong track record of delivering a critical VMWare services. SuperCollider is an E2E big data management and analytical platform. It enables VMware product and business teams to make accurate and quick data driven business decisions as well as engineering teams to build data driven features as part of their on-premise and SaaS products.Like traditional operations groups, we keep critical systems up and running despite hurricanes, bandwidth outages, and configuration problems. Unlike traditional operations groups, we also have full access and authority to fix, extend, and scale the code to keep it working and harden it against all the hazards. We hire people from both systems and software backgrounds. Strong candidates will have experience with both.As a DevOps Engineer in the SuperCollider infrastructure automation team, you will have the opportunity to tackle complex scale and reliability problems. You will participate in the development and operations of the platform infrastructure by adding incremental services, tools and methodologies to increase its availability, performance and serviceability.Responsibilities:
  • Design, write and deliver software and provisioning automation to improve the availability, scalability, performance, and efficiency of SuperCollider
  • Solve problems relating to mission critical services and build automation to prevent problem recurrence; with the goal of automating response to all non-exceptional service conditions
  • Understand third party products and components in data management and analytics
  • Design and implement tools and a framework for software updates and upgrades and develop or leverage automation tools for continuous integration/continuous development and continuous troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot and root cause defects through log and code analysis. Provide workarounds to product defects or provide hot fixes and follow up to closure
  • Monitor resource allocation, consumption, and performance. Engage in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, software performance analysis and system tuning
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible (is a plus)
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools: Terraform, Packer or similar
  • Containerization and orchestration systems: Docker, Kubernetes or public cloud realizations as service
  • Understanding of Unix/Linux systems internals and networking
  • Troubleshooting skills across all infrastructure layers (storage, networking, OS)
  • Experience in monitoring of cloud based systems
  • Experience with source code management (e.g. Git, Perforce, Subversion) systems
Preferred qualifications:
  • Some experience with Apache Hadoop
  • Experience with DB administration and SQL
  • Knowledge in networking administration
